The word “apologetics” comes to us from the apostle Peter’s first epistle, where he exhorts to “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you” (1Peter 3:15b).  The Greek word translated as “defense” is apologia, from which we get our English “apologetics.”  Apologetics means to “give a defense”, or to provide a “reasoned statement or argument.”  The idea communicated by the Holy Spirit through Peter is that as Christians, we ought to able to provide a logical well-reasoned argument for why we have placed our trust in Jesus for salvation.

In our class meetings, we will study Norman Geisler’s book, Twelve Points That Show Christianity Is True. Through lecture, group discussion and study, students will learn that God exists, that Christianity is true, that the Bible is an accurate trustworthy record of historical events, and most importantly that Jesus is in fact the only One who is able to save us from sin and death.

Class schedule:

  1. Truth about reality is knowable.
  2. Opposites cannot both be true.
  3. The theistic God exists.
  4. If God exists, then miracles are possible.
  5. Miracles can be used to confirm a message from God.
  6. The New Testament is historically reliable.
  7. The New Testament says that Jesus claimed to be God.
  8. Jesus’ claim to be God is confirmed by miracles.
  9. Therefore, Jesus is God.
  10. Whatever Jesus (who is God) teaches is true.
  11. Jesus taught that the Bible is the Word of God.
  12. Therefore, it is true that the Bible is the Word of God (and anything opposed to it is false).

Classes meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm beginning on Septermber 6 through November 29.
